Summary

Team case report on AMD for ACC 211: its business and segments, five financial success drivers, and a 2022–2025 financial analysis of the shift to data-center revenue.

AMD is a fabless semiconductor company: it designs its chips and outsources manufacturing, mainly to TSMC, and competes with Intel in CPUs and NVIDIA in GPUs and AI accelerators. The report walks through its three segments (Data Center, Client and Gaming, Embedded), its main revenue sources and five drivers of its financial performance: data-center demand for AI accelerators, product innovation, AI PC adoption, the October 2025 agreement with OpenAI, and the manufacturing efficiency of the fabless model.

The financial analysis covers 2022 to 2025 in three phases: the Xilinx acquisition and its amortization in 2022, the PC and gaming downturn of 2023, and the AI-driven recovery of 2024 and 2025. Over that period revenue grew from $23.6 billion to $34.6 billion and the Data Center segment went from 26% to 48% of revenue, turning a consumer-focused chipmaker into a company led by data-center products.
